The Semiotics of An Old Soul: Why My Mother Thinks I am Not From this Century
The storekeep and I realized this the other day, as my mother's words echoed in my mind.
"What century are you from?" she said to me as she was helping me select an early Christmas gift. I
longingly gazed at the watches section of the boutique mall shop, and chose a designer analog watch, as I
constantly lose track of time and I thought "why not?" I stopped wearing them years ago and miss the look
of a traditional watch. Time to be on time, as being constantly late really is not fashionable. I do not like
"smart" watches as I find them pointless. It is trendy and fun, but as someone who is interested in
horology, I cannot fathom wearing a smartwatch. It is not my style.
As I was making my purchase, I realized I do not like all the new-age ways of paying for things. I find it troubling. " I am not from this century," I told him, and he had a laugh and agreed with me. The old adage goes "If it ain't broke don't fix it."
