Austria- Este

About the House and Archduke Lorenz

To understand the family I am joining, you must look at the map of Europe itself. Through his father, my fiancé is a member of the House of Austria-Este, a junior branch of the storied House of Habsburg-Lorraine. If that name sounds familiar, it is because the Habsburgs shaped the course of Western civilization for centuries, ruling over the Holy Roman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The family’s reach extends far beyond the history books. Archduke Lorenz is also a Prince of Belgium. He acquired the title through his marriage to Princess Astrid, the sister of the current King of the Belgians, Philippe. This unique dual identity means the family is deeply integrated into the Belgian monarchy while maintaining their distinct imperial Austrian heritage. Growing up in this environment, my fiancé inherited a worldview that is truly international, blending the formal traditions of the Belgian Court with the private, historical legacy of the Habsburgs.
What struck me most, however, is not the weight of the titles, but the values that define them. Despite their public standing, the family maintains a remarkable sense of privacy and groundedness. Archduke Lorenz himself enjoys a distinguished career in international banking, proving that the family values hard work and professional merit alongside their ceremonial duties. This balance of duty and dignity is something they pass down to their children.
The family gatherings are a beautiful, multilingual whirlwind. Due to their roots, conversations seamlessly drift between French, Dutch, German, and English. It can be intimidating at first, but the warmth they extend to newcomers is genuine. They do not just see themselves as keepers of history, but as a modern family navigating the world like anyone else with just a slightly more complex family tree.
As I learn more about the lives of my fiancé’s siblings, such as Prince Amedeo, Princess Maria Laura, Princess Luisa, and Princess Laetitia Maria, I see a generation that is carving out its own path. They are entrepreneurs, researchers, and world travelers. All while remaining fiercely loyal to one another and their heritage.
Joining this family feels like becoming a small part of a much larger story. It is a story of resilience, of shifting borders, and of a commitment to service that spans generations. While the world may see "Archdukes" and "Princes," I feel incredibly lucky to simply call them my future in-laws. I look forward to contributing my own chapter to this incredible legacy, and am honored to stand beside a man who carries his history with such grace.

Heir Apparent: Amedeo de Belgique

    The title of
Archduke of Austria-Este carries a profound historical weight, representing the union of the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty with the Italian House of Este. Currently, the head of this illustrious house is Archduke Lorenz, who also holds the title of Prince of Belgium. As the family navigates a modern era, the role of the heir is one of balancing a storied imperial past with a contemporary professional life.
The heir to this heritage is Prince Amedeo, the eldest son of Archduke Lorenz and Princess Astrid of Belgium. Born into the heart of the Belgian Royal Family, Amedeo represents the next chapter of a lineage that once governed vast portions of Europe. His path has been defined by a blend of tradition and modern achievement. He underwent military training at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels and pursued a successful career in international finance after studying at the London School of Economics.
By maintaining a relatively private life while fulfilling his ceremonial duties, the heir ensures that the House of Austria-Este remains a symbol of stability and historical continuity. It is a unique position that honors centuries of European diplomacy while embracing the realities of the 21st century.

My prince and me

In addition to the storied history of the
Habsburgs, joining a family with such deep ties to the Belgian Royal Family adds a layer of contemporary significance to our story. My fiancé’s mother, Princess Astrid, is the sister of King Philippe of Belgium. This places the family at the heart of one of Europe’s most active and respected monarchies. This means that while we honor the imperial traditions of the past, we are also very much a part of the modern Belgian state’s ceremonial life.

One of the most fascinating aspects of the family’s heritage is the House of Austria-Este. This title is not just a historical footnote. It represents a unique fusion of Austrian and Italian nobility. The "Este" portion of the name traces back to the Dukes of Modena in Italy. When the last Duke of Modena died without a male heir in the 19th century, the legacy was passed to the Habsburgs and created the lineage that my father-in-law, Archduke Lorenz, represents today. To marry into this line is to connect with centuries of European diplomacy, art patronage, and territorial history that once spanned from the Alps to the Mediterranean.

Living within this legacy requires a delicate balance of public duty and private life. My fiancé and his siblings Prince AmedeoPrincess Maria Laura, and Princess Luisa Maria and Princess Laetitia Maria all navigated this brilliantly. They are a generation that values education and professional independence. For instance, Prince Amedeo and Princess Maria Laura have pursued careers in international finance and fashion, respectively, proving that the modern royal identity is as much about individual contribution as it is about birthright.

The family’s home base in Brussels serves as a cultural crossroads. Belgium itself is a country of linguistic diversity, and the family reflects this perfectly. It is not uncommon to hear three or four languages spoken at the dinner table. This multilingual environment fostered a global outlook in my fiancé from a young age. Whether discussing European politics, global economics, or family anecdotes, the conversation is always intellectually stimulating and inclusive.

There is also a profound sense of spiritual and moral duty that runs through the family. The Habsburgs historically are defenders of faith and tradition, and those values remain a guiding light for the family today. They carry this mantle with a quiet humility. There is no pretension, and instead, there is a deep-seated belief in noblesse oblige. This is the idea that those with privilege hold a responsibility to act with generosity and integrity toward others.

As I look toward our future together, I am inspired by the way my fiancé carries the weight of his name with such ease. He is proud of his ancestors: the Emperors, Kings, and Archdukes. He is also defined by his own character. Becoming a part of this family is a journey of discovery, and I am eager to learn even more about the traditions, from the Royal Palace of Brussels to the historic estates of the Habsburg-Este line.

Embracing my role as the spouse of
Prince Joachim of Belgium allows me to represent a bridge between the rich heritage of the House of Austria-Este and a vibrant, modern future. bring a unique blend of American dynamism and international flair to the Belgian Royal Family. As a journalist, author, and model, I offer a fresh perspective that resonates with a global, contemporary audience. I am not just joining a lineage. I bring my own legacy of dedication, considering my academic excellence all throughout my life and currently at Syracuse University. I built a multifaceted career in the arts and journalism.

My role is one of modern royalty, where I am focused on authenticity, hard work, and a commitment to service. Through my writings, I aims to inspire others by demonstrating that tradition and innovation can coexist beautifully. By bringing my passion for fashion, culture, and humanitarian advocacy to the forefront, I am poised to excite the public with my innovations and breathe new life into the ceremonial traditions of the Belgian Court. Together with Joachim, I am is ready to lead with grace, showing the world what a 21st-century royal partnership truly looks like.
