The Man, the Myth, the Legend: HRH Prince Joachim of Belgium



Prince Joachim of Belgium (born December 9, 1991) is a member of the Belgian Royal Family and is currently 11th in line to the Belgian throne. He is the third child and younger son of Princess Astrid of Belgium and Prince Lorenz, Archduke of Austria-Este. 

Background and Education

Full Name: Joachim Karl-Maria Nikolaus Isabelle Marcus d'Aviano.

Military Career: He completed basic army training in Arlon and graduated as an officer in the Belgian Navy in 2011.

Higher Education:

Earned a Bachelor's degree in International Economics, Management, and Finance from Bocconi University in Milan.

Obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Harvard Business School in 2021.

Professional Life: As of 2026, he works in the private financial sector as a managing partner for Innesto Partners in Brussels. He generally stays out of the public eye and does not perform official royal duties. 

Succession Rights

Prince Joachim holds a unique place in Belgian royal history as the first member of the royal family born into a female line to have automatic succession rights to the throne. This was made possible by the 1991 change in Belgian law to absolute primogeniture, which allowed his mother and her descendants to be included in the line of succession.
